Breaking into MEP: the graduate route nobody explains

1 September 2026

Building services doesn’t get the careers-fair glamour of structures or architecture, which means the route in is rarely explained well. If you’re a graduate weighing it up, here’s the version nobody puts on a slide.

Consultancy or contractor?

A consultancy teaches you design: calculations, modelling, coordinating a building on paper. A contractor teaches you delivery: how that design survives contact with a real site. Both are valuable; the first usually gives a broader grounding early on.

CIBSE membership is the spine of your career

Chartership through CIBSE is what turns “graduate engineer” into “engineer”. Pick an employer that runs a structured training agreement and gives you a mentor. It’s worth more than a slightly higher starting salary.

Choose the employer that trains you

Early on, the projects matter less than the people you learn from. Ask in interviews how graduates are developed, who you’d report to, and what last year’s intake is doing now. The answers tell you everything.
